Tha Whole Truth About Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj

A little over a week ago, I opened my Facebook app, as I regularly do, and something was odd. Every other post was about Remy Ma. “Why Remy had to do her like that?”, “Remy Ma coming for that crown…”, “Damn, Remy Ma, just killed her career…” and on and on. Me, being the hip-hop head I am, I rushed to the blogosphere and tracked down this “murder”, only to find a half-assed attempt at the biggest female rapper in hip-hop history. For the record, I am nowhere near a fan of Nicki Minaj, in fact, the past three years have netted zero verses from her that are worth mentioning. Yet and still, facts are facts. She’s earned her Rap Queen crown. In fact, there’s no other female rapper close to her status.

Since this diss track was released, I have heard everything from “Remy is all bars” to “Remy was the queen before she went to jail and she just wants her spot back”. Let’s get this straight, Remy Ma was never and will never be the Queen of Rap. February 7, 2006 she released her debut album, There’s Something About Remy and it sold 35,000 copies its first week and has amassed a whopping 160,000 copies sold to date. Not much for a so called queen to do, but get frustrated, beat a bitch ass for little to nothing and end up with a bid. She shot a member of her own entourage in 2007 and was found guilty after a trial in 2008. At no time was she on top of the charts or considered the “Queen of Rap”, other than by her own camp.

In fact, the only song that she was on before prison that charted high enough to be mentioned was a feature on Fat Joe’s “Lean Back”, which was a HIT by all standards, but not close to her own. Her verse was okay… “R to the Easy… M to the Wizz-I”… “H to the Izz-O…V to the Izz-A” or whatever, but it wasn’t “GREAT” enough for us to keep talking about her having “BARS”.

Now, let’s talk about this “Battle Career” that people keep referring to…

The End… These were considered “classic battles” because of the two people involved and their major affiliations at the time, but nothing about the lyrics were classic or memorable.

Let’s look at Nicki’s album releases…

Let’s look at Nicki’s award history…

Let’s look at Nick’s singles history…

Oh, the “BARS”…

Enough said…

Now, that that’s out the way, let’s talk about the real issue. Let me reiterate again… I am not a Nicki Minaj fan. The truth is ONE, though… Remy has been jealous of Nicki’s position and taking shots since she came home. I would understand this if she was Eve at the height of her career and went to prison. I would understand this if she was Queen Latifah, Da Brat, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, or hell, even Trina at the height of their careers and went to jail, but she was not the Queen then and never was. She is a decently talented artist with a couple nice co-signs, but that’s pretty much the end of it. She has been out of jail a copulent years now and just released her first project, which happens to be a joint project with Fat Joe. The album, Plata O Plomo, moved about 12,000 units its first week. There’s really no need to keep up the comparisons. Remy should focus on making better music, because beef hype only last a few weeks and Nicki ignoring her made her drop “Another One” that was… Well, you heard it.

Although her haters would digress, Nicki’s silence is golden. Obviously, the “Shether” song is doing well, but not because people are Remy fans, but because when you’re at the top, you have a lot of haters and Nicki has been there for a long time now. It’s no different than Lebron James or Floyd Mayweather. Some of us watch to see their greatness as they make history game in and fight out, but a lot of people watch and pray on their downfall. Why does everyone want the top people to lose?…

Because it makes them human.

Remy has a long way to go before she’s really in competition with Nicki Minaj. Like it or not, she has gone where no other female rapper has gone and stayed there for years. If she was mad about some subliminals, even though she had taken a few shots herself, she should have reached out and asked if they were aimed at her. If she was mad about Nicki attempting to “black ball” her, even though I don’t see what award she would’ve been up for, let along win, she should’ve reached out and got an understanding. The diss record hype will be over in time for the next award show, which she’ll probably not have a nomination at, and they’ll stop her at the door. Response or not, Remy Ma will never win this war.

Should the “Queen of Rap” defend her crown against every female with a gripe? Would her lack of response make me like her even less? Would a great response make me like her even more? The answer to all of those questions are exactly the same… HELL NO. I have never bought a Nicki Minaj record and I probably never will. I haven’t heard a Nicki Minaj verse I liked in years, but she’s not making music for me to like. One glance at the numbers and it’s clear to see that a lot of people love what she’s doing and can’t wait to spend their hard-earned money on it. Maybe some of those same people would have given Remy a shot, too. Maybe some of those people helped drive the numbers up for the diss record, but most people don’t care to here what Remy has to say unless it involves Nicki Minaj. Whatever the case, her album was just released and it… Well, let’s just say “Shether” may be SUICIDE.
